Winter Solstice Community Potluck on the Farm
Thu, Dec 21
|Sister Grove Farm
An evening of Poetry and Potluck - Stories and Stargazing.
Time & Location
Dec 21, 2023, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Sister Grove Farm, 1731 Jim Cannon Rd, Van Alstyne, TX 75495, USA
About the event
You are invited for Poetry and Potluck - Stories and Stargazing (if it's not too cloudy) on the evening of the Winter Solstice. Locally sourced Beef Chili and Lamb Ham will be provided for our meal by Sister Grove Farm. We ask that you bring a side dish and/or a beverage of choice that is as locally sourced (to you) as possible. If all you can bring is an appetite, that's okay too!
At these dinners, we are committed to building community around the possibility of our creating a healthier and more resilient local food system. Since "eating is an agricultural act," we are all in it together so let's meet at the table and get to know each other. Share stories of farms, ranches, and gardens that have shaped us - long ago memories or recent. Share any heartbreaks or hopes we may carry with us around food and farming.
Joining us to share some of their farming story will be Thomas and Gillian Locke of Bois d'Arc Meat Co. in Honey Grove, Texas. If you don't know them, this interview with the Dallas Observer offers a good introduction.
Portions of our time together will be outside so dress for the weather. Check in at the Pavilion at 5pm (or a little earlier) to drop off your food. Then gather by the Yule Log as we greet the night and seek its wonder.
This will be the longest night of the year. The opening chapter of Genesis affirms that creation begins in darkness. Likewise, the Jesus story begins with angels appearing to shepherds in the dead of night - and stars in the sky whose announcement can be made visible only in darkness. Finally, it is in the embrace of the soil that a seed is held and nourished as it waits until the right time to germinate.
The Yule Log at Sister Grove Farm will remain burning for three nights (December 21, 22, and 23) for any friends, shepherds, or neighbors to warm themselves.
